Children’s Counseling and Play Therapy
Your child may be crying, withdrawn and/or refuse to listen to you. Some may be angry and aggressive. Child Therapy helps your child to learn better skills to cope with difficulties, to be successful at school and get along with his/her parents and siblings.
Depending on your child’s problem areas, we use art supplies, play therapy toys and workbooks to facilitate their expression of thoughts and feelings. Since children may not be articulate in talk-therapy, play therapy is extremely helpful for younger children, children with language difficulties due to Autism Spectrum Disorders, Down Syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Child therapy also helps children with ADHD, divorced parents and other adjustment problems.
Besides the individual child therapy, we meet with parents and other family members in order to work on parenting skills and problem solving skills in the family.
While doing the ongoing talk, play therapy, and/or family therapy, you may be guided to seek additional support such as other doctors for ADHD , depression medication trials, assessments of learning disability, and Autism assessment etc. Creating a most effective suppor team for your child is very important. I will also do all coordinating and team building works for your child and your family.
See the challenges of childhood page for some of the reasons children may act out.
Teen Counseling
Do you live with one of angry and unpredictable teens? You are not alone. Living with one or more at this stage of life is not easy. Teen therapy or counseling helps them to see themselves objectively. It helps for teens to see a person (therapist/counselor) outside of the family structure who listens to them and understands their point of views. You as a parent may be trapped by an ongoing unproductive interaction with your teenage kids. They can learn better problem solving skills during the individual counseling and psychotherapy. You can learn some skills and techniques for dealing with their unique challenges.
School problems, problems with peers and drug alcohol problems can be worked through during counseling.
Divorce
During the divorce process, you probably were overwhelmed and it was difficult to think about what was best for your kids…. When you thought that you had worked through the difficult time, your child began acting out…Children of divorced families benefit from having individual counseling to process their own feelings toward parents’ divorce.
